The Goals of the CMHD

  • Use genome-wide random mutagenesis in mice and mouse embryonic stem cells to discover new genes and create new mouse models
  • Understand the genetic basis of human anatomy, physiology and disease
  • Translate understanding into better diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic treatments
  • Develop novel mutagenic strategies to enhance the power of the mouse model for understanding human biology and disease
  • Develop and provide access to phenotyping tools to researchers Canada-wide

Why Mice?

  • The genes of mice are very similar to humans
  • Mice show many clinical symptoms of human disease
  • The mouse genome sequence will soon be available
  • Powerful techniques for genetic alterations
  • Experimental models for testing new therapies
